Horizant Side Effects

Most people are able to use Horizant without any problems. However, in clinical studies, up to 20 percent of people taking this drug experienced drowsiness. Other common side effects of Horizant included dizziness, fatigue, and headache. If you develop any potentially serious symptoms during treatment, such as an allergic reaction or suicidal thoughts, seek immediate medical attention.

An Introduction to Horizant Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Horizant™ (gabapentin enacarbil) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Horizant. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Horizant

Horizant has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Horizant, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In clinical trials, the most common side effect of Horizant 600 mg once daily (the standard recommended dosage) included:

  • Drowsiness -- in up to 20 percent of people
  • Dizziness -- up to 17 percent
  • Headache -- up to 12 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 8 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 6 percent
  • Swelling and water retention in the extremities (hands, ankles, and feet) -- up to 6 percent
  • Irritability -- up to 4 percent.

Other common side effects of Horizant, occurring in 1 to 3 percent of people, included but were not limited to:

  • Dry mouth
  • Gas
  • Feeling "drunk"
  • Increased appetite
  • A spinning sensation (vertigo).

This data includes information about the side effects reported at the recommended Horizant dosages. Taking higher dosages increases the risks for many of these side effects.
